Featured Artist September 2010- Jordan, Montana Artist Judy Bollinger
Judy was born and raised on a ranch in Brusett, Montana, some 35 miles northwest of Jordan. She
recalls growing up riding horses, farming and enjoying the good life the open country of Montana offered. Her father used to
bring home injured birds and other orphaned animals for her to nurse back to health. Through this she learned to love all
animals, large and small. She graduated from Garfield County High School and attended NMC in Havre to become a nurse.
She took Art as a minor in school and also completed a number of correspondence courses in Fine
Art. Her Aunt Phyllis Watt was one of her greatest influences in art. Judy also attended some watercolor classes offered by
Bette Johnson, whom she also considers a very influential teacher. She also remembers watching her grandfather draw cartoons
as a child, and enjoyed the crazy looking "critters" he created. As a result of this influence she began sketching horses on
her school papers as a student.
Judy started painting with oil, then later switched to watercolor as her primary medium. She
enjoyed the greater challenges of watercolor, and also because her husband did not care for the smell of the oils and the
required thinning agents around the house. She started with landscapes and sceneries, but later migrated to painting the
animals and wildlife she grew to love as a child.
She has shown her work in public and private shows in Wolf Point, Jordan, Miles City,
Florence and Stevensville, Montana. She has entered her work in county fairs and has won many "Best of Show" and "People's
Choice" awards for her work. She enjoys learning new mediums and techniques and has recently developed an interest in
pastel and acrylic.
